The earliest sign of human life in India is the Bhimbetka rock shelters it shows that some of these shelters were inhabited for 100,000 years. The earliest cave paintings are meant to be from the  Mesolithic period.

The latest paintings found are said to be from the medieval periods. The paintings are usually in the colours red and white with the occasional use of green and yellow.  Serra da Capivara National Park in the north of Brazil is a national park that was created to protect many prehistoric cave paintings found here. This is now a world heritage site. The picture above is an image of some cave paintings found at this site.

Cueva de loas manos this is the Spanish for the "Cave of hands". It is located in Santa Cruz,Argentina beside these paintings of hands there is also cave paintings of human beings, rheas and felines with that there are images of zigzag patterns that represent the sun and images of hunting scenes. paintings a lot alike are found very near this cave.

The image of hands on a cave wall have been dated for around 550BC. Most of these hands are left which tells us that the painter held the spray pipe in there right hand or the dexterous hand. Most of the hands are the size of a 13 year old boy some think that they stamped there hand as a sign there were moving into adult hood.

Cave painting in Australia

Early cave paintings have been found Kakadu. They sometimes used ochre for their cave paintings. The aboriginal artists used ochre and many other materials like Kimberley. Ochre is not an organic material  so it makes it hard to date and near impossible through carbon dating.

The picture to the right is  an image of cave paintings like the cave painting found in centre of the Arnhem Land plateau. These cave paintings have been shown to be useful  on finding out species that are now extinct. An example of this is an emu like bird with a stretched out neck which has been discovered. It showed that it had become extinct over 40,000 years ago.

The Whitsunday Islands also have many cave paintings. These are by the seafaring Ngaro people on Hook Island, Australia. These do not have abstract and figurative content which is a mystery.

The video above is about Australia's cave art and how the aboriginal people have shown how they believed the world was created through the rock art. It was called The Dream Time   It also shows other paintings and the meanings.

Introduction

Hi, my name is Jessica and I am writing this blog about the geography of cave painting. The reason I am writing this blog is because I have had an interest in art my whole life yet never looked into cave painting. I would like to learn more about this topic.

Each of my posts will be on cave painting and how they are different all over the world. I will also look into the meaning of the different cave paintings, our earliest recording of history.
